Can Bowen therapy help me to resolve pain or injury?
The Bowen Technique, or Bowen therapy, is a gentle and dynamic form of soft tissue manipulation developed to stimulate your body’s energy flow and help balance the body so it can heal itself. A Bowen therapist performs a series of light, precise moves over muscles, nerves and connective tissue, along with periodic and important pauses between each series of movements that offer time for your body to benefit from each set.
Bowen therapy is safe for anyone from newborns to the elderly, and is profound in its action, producing lasting relief from pain and discomfort.
Developed in Australia by Tom Bowen (1916-1982), his muscle rolling technique is a model of simplicity and can be used for a large variety of conditions including:
- back pain and sciatica
- breast tenderness and lactation problems
- childhood illnesses
- digestive problems
- knee and ankle problems
- menstrual irregularities and pain
- migraines and headaches
- neck, shoulder and jaw (TMJ) problems
- pregnancy and infertility issues
- respiratory conditions and hayfever
- sports injuries
- stress and tension symptoms
- tailbone injuries
A Bowen treatment usually lasts 30 minutes to an hour while you are lying down or sitting comfortably. You’ll feel a deep sense of overall relaxation allowing your body to recharge and restructure itself. Most patients find lasting relief in only three to five treatments.
Other forms of manipulative therapy performed four days before or up to five days after a Bowen treatment may interfere with its effectiveness, but Bowen does not interfere with the benefits of other disciplines.
